HTML5 has been "the talk of the town" for a long time, but what's the story, and what is DigiEyeZ's position on the matter?
HTML5 is debated widely in the industry and there are many views. There is so much hype about HTML5, that an overwhelming number of companies demand that their new portal or platform adheres to that standard. But what is HTML5, and where lies the forces and where you should not expect miracles?
"HTML5 is a language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web, and is a core technology of the Internet originally proposed by Opera Software. It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard (created in 1990 and standardized as HTML4 as of 1997) and as of November 2011 is still under development. Its core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices (web browsers, parsers, etc.)."

For some time, flash sites and flash elements, and latest Microsoft Silverlight, have been the benchmark in relation to creating multimedia content in web pages, but along with the rising of HTML5 and not least the growing popularity of the iPhone and the iPad (despite the fact that Apple does not allow flash to run on these platforms), flash based content is slowly descending into the background of sites using HTML5. In the article "SEO Best Practices For HTML5: Truths, Half-Truths & Outright Lies" Kerry Dean emphasize 6 bullets, where HTML5 improves the web experience:
- Brings several improvements in usability and user experience
- Has several new tags that will help developers classify important content
- Is awesome for sites rich in media (audio & video)
- Is an amazing alternative to Flash and Silverlight
- Is SEO-friendly when it comes to website crawling and indexing
- Is going to be heavily used for mobile apps and games
The conclusion is that in web solutions where rich media is weighted heavily, there is the most to be gained. Also, in apps on smartphones and tablets, HTML5 is the right thing to use. From an SEO perspective, HTML5 is also preferable over Flash, where "the philosopher's stone" have never been found, in relation to indexing content.
There is obviously a "but", which basically is about the fact that the standard is still under development and therefore is not supported by all browsers, or at least not all tags are supported equally well, and Google is not fully prepared to fully indexing content. However, Google writes that that they will monitor the progress closely, and adjust accordingly. In conclusion, reviews of the new HTML5 standard, are mostly positive. As a consequence of the obvious potential that exists when using the HTML5 standard, DigiEyeZ is in the process of adopting the standard, and the first development projects are already far along, so that way we can ensure that our portals are aligned with the media consumption development - also on smartphones and tablets.
